    World rankings, decoded

Why does a university rank where it does?

A headline number tells you almost nothing. Each ranking is a weighted recipe. See exactly which factors drive a position, and whether they matter for what you want to study.

    How APS works

Seven levels, six subjects, one score.

Your Admission Point Score converts each NSC subject percentage into an achievement level from 1 to 7. Most universities add the levels for your best six subjects, excluding Life Orientation.

Some universities, including UCT and Wits, use their own scoring systems — for example a points score built from your percentages, or extra weight for Maths and English. Our calculator uses the common NSC scale and flags the subject minimums faculties set.
